It got me thinking about my own wedding in 1977, and the only thing I remember about the food is the wedding cake, which I made myself.
Three square tiers of rich fruit cakes, each of a different size. The hard royal icing made with egg whites, and the filigree piping that gave me painful hands for days after. I kept the top tier for the christening of our first child. That was the tradition in those days. I am not sure if it still is. Perhaps someone can tell me in a comment.
We posed for pictures, but never actually got to cut the cake. We left that to the caterers. Some might say it's bad luck not to make the first cut of your own wedding cake, but not for us. We were married for nearly 48 wonderful years.

My mother in law made our wedding cake. She transported it from Gloucestershire to Essex bless her. It was three tiers of fruit cake, chocolate cake and carrot cake. Covered in marzipan, icing and a cascade of shimmering Autumn leaves. I didn't truly appreciate what she had done for me until I learnt to make wedding cakes myself.
I am so impressed you made your own wedding cake, Lynn! Wowie! And it’s gorgeous to boot! My wedding cake was made by a bakery nearly 60 miles away. I can’t believe they delivered it and set it up for me early on a Saturday morning. It was a beautiful (and delicious) chocolate cake with Baileys Irish cream filling, American buttercream frosting, and decorated with large white chocolate curls. It was kind of trendy that year (1994) but when I look at photos of it today I am still so happy I ordered it.
